Connection Between Diabetes & Oral Health
Did you know that there is a link between diabetes and oral health? Diabetes can cause a variety of oral health complications if it isn’t carefully monitored and regulated. Keep reading to learn more about the connection between mouth health and diabetes.
How Does Diabetes Affect Oral Health?
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when blood sugar is too high. Poor blood sugar regulation can cause a slew of health problems, including issues relating to oral health. Some of these oral health problems include:
- Periodontal Disease
Diabetes can cause blood vessels to thicken, which slows the flow of vital nutrients to and from organs and tissues in the body. With diabetes, defenses are down and the body is not as capable of fighting off and preventing infections from forming, like periodontal (gum) disease.
- Dry Mouth
One of the effects of diabetes is lower saliva production, which can lead to dry mouth. Without proper levels of saliva, the mouth becomes a breeding ground for bad bacteria, infection, and decay.
- Prolonged, Difficult Healing
Due to lower white blood cell counts and thicker blood vessels, patients with diabetes often experience slower, more complicated healing after medical treatments, including oral surgeries. They must be carefully monitored to ensure that no serious complications arise.
- Oral Fungal Infection
Thrush is a fungus that grows in the mouth. It thrives in environments with high sugar levels which is why patients with uncontrolled diabetes are more susceptible to developing this fungal infection.
